Middling

/MID-ling/

Definition
Middling is betting both sides of a game at different numbers, hoping the final result lands between them. You win both bets if you hit the middle. It requires significant line movement to create middle opportunities, and you're risking losing vig on both sides.
Example

Monday you bet Chiefs -3. By Sunday, the line moves to Chiefs -7. You bet Raiders +7. If Chiefs win by 4, 5, or 6, you win BOTH bets. If they win by 3 or less, or 7+, you win one and lose one (push/small loss).

Common Questions

They can be if you hit the middle enough to overcome the vig on both sides. You need at least 3-4 point movement to make middles worthwhile. Many middles are low probability but high reward.

Depends on the numbers. NFL middles through 3 and 7 hit more often due to key numbers. A 4-point middle hits roughly 10-15% of the time. Calculate EV before chasing middles.
